We typically find comfort in familiar things, places and people. The comfort is even more intense when we knew them from a time when we didn't feel so badly broken and bruised. And all along the way of life, most people from our past had either been a reason for tearing us apart with harsh words and actions, or walking away from our life without a reason making us feel abandoned. This rare event of coming across a familiar face fills us with so much hope. They remind us the younger version of ourselves who was full of hope and cheerful most of the time.
The familiarity is just an external trigger, a portkey to the place we yearn to be. Actual comfort is from the vivid emotional memories of our younger self who was whole and happy, untouched by harshness of life.
